Kir Yianni

For those that haven’t heard of Xinomavro, its literal translation is sour black. But there’s nothing sour about these wines.

Regarded as one of the most noble grape varieties in the world, Xinomavro is indigenous to northern Greece and a big hearty wine like a Barolo, in fact like the italian variety it ages extremely well.

Xinomavro vines are also quite disease resistant, meaning the grapes are generally growing on Phylloxera free plants. Similar to Pinot Noir, they really well reflect the terroir of area they grow, so two different blocks can produce two distinctly different wines.

A typical Xinomavro is a ruby colour, with an aromatic bouquet that exhibits red and black berries, violet through to tobacco and mushrooms. They’re high acidic and have lots of tannins – lending itself to ageing very well.

Kir Yianni have been producing wines in Naoussa since 1997, when Yiannis Boutaris (4th generation winemaker) left the family business to establish his own winery. His son Stellios has taken over and taken this business from strength to strength. Making some incredible wines, and they’re incredible value.
